“Rädsla” 2022

Rädsla is a board game I made with three friends through the UCLA Summer Game Lab program. The game is a card-based “dungeon crawler-style game” that is set in an IKEA. The goal is to escape IKEA without being tempted to buy anything and leave with the most money. I helped with the card art, characters, enemies' stats, and the game's rules. This was a true group effort and provided valuable experience in collaborating with a team.

Game Map/Board

Here is the game map we created. As you can see we went with an IKEA theme, using yellow and blue for the color palette. Each box represents a room in which the players can encounter enemies or items. The boxes are labeled to represent different sections of IKEA. The lines represent the different paths the players can take from room to room.

Character Cards

Here are the character cards of our game. Each character is unique with their own stats and special powers as shown on the cards.

Enemy Cards

Here are the enemy cards of the game. All the enemy cards are based on actual products that are sold by IKEA. The enemy cards each have different stats, special powers, and costs which are all shown on the cards. For example, “Djunkleskog” being the boss enemy, has the strongest stats. There are also trap cards, which are represented as salespeople, who try to sell the player more things.

Item Cards

Here are the item cards of the game. There are two item cards, “meatballs” and “membership card halves”. A Meatball is used to restore the player’s will or health. The Membership Card Halves are collective items that the group needs to collect together in order to beat the game. Both halves are scattered randomly on the board and you need both to win.

Basic Game Rules

Here are the basic game rules we developed as a group. As you can see, while the game concept is very simple, the specifics of the rules are intricate. It took a lot of time to design and test them, so as to make the game fun, challenging, and fair.
